Daniel and I spent a week in Northern Spain, dodging park rangers, fighting goats and not getting lost in the 'bermuda triangle' of mountains. We hate package travel tours, spending unnecessary money and enjoy finding new things (for ourselves). There were another nine weeks of travel adventures that followed this week (Moroccan gendarme encounters, hitchhiking, flamenco dancing, illegal camping.....). We've always had our 'own' path, so you can pretty much say that we have differentiated our life, style (haven't you seen Daniel's footwear?) and approach to many things in this world. SO, when I was introduced to this term, it was pretty much second nature to me and our life. I think this picture could be a metaphor for differentiation in the classroom- there is one goal, but many ways to meet it.

Click on the two links to the left in order to see two example formative assessments that I will use in this unit.
Another way for students to assess themselves individually is through the use of our Spanish 1 quizlet class site. If you click on the highlighted quizlet text that will take you right to my personalized class site. I use and update this site with each new set of vocabulary and grammar. Students can choose how and when they want to use it. It is also available as an APP that they can download on their phone so they can practice on the go. (It's free too). |

In terms of formative assessments, I have been trying a new approach- I want my students to maintain all of their formative work in one place. In order to do that I have given each student a blue assignment book where they do their daily formative assessments. They are mostly in the form of vocabulary and listening comprehension. I keep them in our classroom and they can use it as instant feedback. We take the quiz / activity, I collect them, we review the answers, I assess them on the target and give it back to them within the class or by the next one. We are on week 6 of this approach and it has worked out really well.
The other thing that I implemented is a unit HOL assessment tailored to the Spanish 1 (and I also did it in Spanish 3) classroom. I used the CVU HOL ESL of perserverance, participation and preparation. I created scales and targets designed with the Spanish 1 classroom in mind. Students evaluate themselves and then I go through them and give them feedback from my perspective on their approach to class. You can find that file right here.
