My takeaways from Art of Changing the Brain:
For me this book was the hard, cold scientific evidence for differentiated instruction in the class. I enjoyed thinking about the different ways that emotion and relevance connect to help brains (and ultimately learning) develop and transform. I created a bullet-ed list of topics that stood out for me as I read this book.
Fair isn't Always Equal. I really enjoyed thinking about the content that Wormeli makes a case for in this book. "Be fair and developmentally appropriate"( Wormeli 6) is a really good way of summarizing the approach that he recommends for educators.
The message in his book resonates with the grading changes that have been occurring within our school as well. I think about the way that I used to use grades as a punitive measure instead of thinking about it as growth. I enjoy seeing students grow as people and learners, shouldn't my grading techniques reflect that philosophy?
RESOURCES: Zachary Jones: http://zachary-jones.com/zambombazo/ * This is one of my favorite sites to use in class. They publish relevant, engaging and cultural pieces of music, short films, movie trailers, interviews and art from all over the Spanish speaking world. It is updated on a daily basis. Quizlet: http://www.quizlet.com *An integral part of the home school Spanish connection! #CVUSBL - Monica Carter, Emily Rinkema and Stan Williams *An in house resource right under our noses! Thank you. WHY the photos? I believe that there are many different places, and ways to learn. Learning occurs all the time. These are all photos that I have taken as an educator with my students. |
